This half term Year 1 explored the question ‘Why are plants important?’. We began by planting seeds in the Year 1 garden so that we can observe them grow over the Summer term. Throughout the project also learnt how to conduct an experiement like a true scientist, thinking about our question, hypothesis, experiment and result. We tested out growing seeds in different environments to see what a plant needs to grow. We dissected a plant to find out about the structure of plant and the function of its parts. We went on nature walks and identified different wild flowers in Stratford and learnt about biodiversity and the importance of plants in our lives. We finished the project by creating a sketch of our own flower bed that we would like to see in our gardens at School 360, thinking about which flowers and vegetables will work best. We also had a fantastic trip to the London Wetlands Reserve, where we explored the nature that lives in a wetland area and found out more about migratory birds and their journey.
