Over the course of this project we navigated big questions such as:
Who are we? Who am I? (what is my identity?) What makes me special? What makes our class special? (similarities and differences) Who is in my family? Are all families the same?
Through the planning and drawing of self-portraits where we spoke in depth about what each child looks like and how to best represent themselves accurately. Through feedback and modelling the children developed a critical understanding of how they should draw themselves and why. They were able to choose appropriate colours for their skin, hair and eyes. We also spoke in depth about our families and how families can be different to our own. We also approached topics such as how to make friends and what making friends looks like in our classroom through our school value of kindness. The project worked towards a brilliant final art exhibition where the children’s self-portraits were framed and hung up in the hall for their adults at home to come and see.
